  25.             The International Centre for Distance Learning (ICDL)  is  a
  26.             documentation centre based on the campus of the Open Univer-
  27.             sity in the United Kingdom, specializing in  collecting  and
  28.             disseminating  information  on distance education worldwide.
  29.             With a grant from the British Government's Overseas Develop-
  30.             ment  Administration, ICDL has now developed a comprehensive
  31.             computerized database on distance  education  for  the  Com-
  32.             monwealth of Learning.

  34.             The database contains information on :

  37.                o+  Distance-taught programmes and courses  in  the   Com-
  38.                   monwealth (22,000+)
  39.  
  40.                o+  Distance teaching institutions worldwide (600+)

  42.                o+  Literature  of  distance  education  worldwide  (4500+
  43.                   entries)

  45.             Some of the literature entries contain full text  of  papers
  46.             as well as bibliographic details and abstracts.

  69.             The database can be accessed from the Internet using Telnet:

  75.             Further progress requires  a  subscriber  account  code  and
  76.             password,  but  potential users are invited to leave details
  77.             for contact by logging in with the  account  code  NEW,  see
  78.             below.

  82.             The database changed from open access, during  its  develop-
  83.             ment  stage,  to  subscribers  only  on  1st September 1992.
  84.             Further information on subscription charges  (initially  set
  85.             at 200 pounds for 1992 through 1993) can be obtained by log-
  86.             ging in with the Account code NEW and leaving  email  and/or
  87.             postal address on the facility provided.  Developing country
  88.             users may be given free access or may obtain a free copy  of
  89.             the CD-ROM version.

  93.             The database is also available on  CD_ROM.  ICDL  also  pub-
  94.             lishes  a  quarterly  hard copy accessions list, which gives
  95.             details of literature  in  distance  education  received  in
  96.             ICDL.  This list is available by writing to ICDL. ICDL would
  97.             like to hear about  new  literature  and  from  institutions
  98.             involved in distance teaching. General enquiries may be sent
